Alongside Mitcham Gardens, the community has access to allotments, providing individuals and families with the opportunity to grow their own food. However, due to a substantial price increase imposed by the council, most of the allotments had to be given up. Despite this setback, the group retains one allotment, which is used for community activities and provides a dedicated space for residents to engage in gardening.
While the loss of additional plots is disappointing, the remaining allotment continues to offer a valuable opportunity for people to learn about food cultivation, sustainability, and self-sufficiency. The project keeps gardening accessible to the community, ensuring that at least some local growing opportunities remain available.
In addition to maintaining the allotment, the community now has access to a disused local field that was previously owned by the local primary school. It remains neglected and frequently vandalised, the field has become a hotspot for antisocial behaviour and is mainly used by dog walkers. After extensive discussions and planning, we have taken responsibility for the space and will begin transforming it into a vibrant hub for children and young people in the neighbourhood.
This rejuvenated field will provide a safe and supportive environment for local youth, with a focus on tackling antisocial behaviour through positive engagement. Abilities Together CIC plans and deliver confidence-building and self-esteem workshops, encouraging personal development and pride among young participants. By reclaiming this space, the initiative fosters a sense of ownership, belonging, and lasting positive change.
